Dipinjam daripada bahasa Hindustan ہِنْدُوسْتان (hindūstān) / हिंदुस्तान (hindustān), sendiri daripada bahasa Parsi Klasik هِنْدُوسْتَان (hindūstān, “subbenua India”). Dengan surface analysis, Hindu +‎ -stan.
